  • Blueprint for Leadership – How to Be a Better Leader

If you were to build a house, you would begin with a blueprint. This blueprint proves useful because it contains more than directions on how to build a house. It also describes the finished house.

So, what does this have to do with leadership?

    Advertisements

Last month I asked an audience of leaders to tell me the characteristics of an ideal leader. Their answers were (in the order collected):

A good listener, enthusiasm, passion, shows appreciation, a visionary, role model, trusting, integrity, organized, knowledgeable, credibility, persuasive, charisma, team building, clarity of purpose, problem solver, attitude of service, leads by example, patience, willing to act without complete knowledge, understands followers, consistent, empowers other people, and adapts to change.

I’ll add that this is essentially the same list that I receive from other audiences when I ask this question. From this comes some useful insights.

    1) Notice what the list contains. All of these characteristics relate to the human side of leadership. That’s interesting because I often hear people minimize this side of leadership with terms like “soft” or “touchy feely.” Actually, applying these characteristics requires more strength than not.

The Ultimate Book of Motivation will help you:

    • Turn self-defeating thoughts around

    2) Notice what the list excludes. Absent from this list (and all lists from other programs) are characteristics such as stern, mean, serious, short tempered, vindictive, tough, angry, harsh, punitive, controlling, violent, or ruthless. And that’s interesting because many popular representations of leadership emphasize at least one of these “hard” characteristics. In fact, these characteristics are the refuge of those who lack the strength (or the skills) to apply the human side of leadership.

    3) How about you? How would you rate yourself as a leader compared to the list of positive characteristics? If you were to survey the people who report to you, how would they describe your leadership? Would they list characteristics from the “soft” list or from the “hard” list? Could you become more effective by improving upon any of the “soft” characteristics? And how about the other leaders in your organization? Do they truly maximize human potential?

People want leaders who treat them with genuine compassion, courtesy, and respect. They want leaders who help them become more successful. They want leaders who inspire them with a vision for a better world and show them how to go there.

  • Five good tips of being more promotable

There are a lot of things that you can do to make yourself look good in front of the boss. You will want to make sure that you keep in mind all the things that you would like to do for the company and how you will be able to make it through the other side of the new, up coming promotion. There is a lot that you can do for yourself and to make yourself look better. You will want to keep the following seven tips in mind when trying to go for any promotion.

    Advertisements

First, you will want to make sure that you work as hard as you possibly can. You will also want to make sure that you try to do the overtime, come in early, stay late, take on more work, and do everything you can to keep your name on every part of the company. You will find that there is a lot of things that you will have to give up to get the promotion through hard work and dedication. This is very important when it comes to getting a promotion.

Secondly, you will not only need to put in the time and hard work, but you will need to adjust the way that you approach these tasks. You can’t just rub the fact that you are really putting in the time in the face of those who are unable to spend the time at work because of their family. You need to be honest, kind, and considerate of others.

Thirdly, honesty comes in handy. You will need to work hard, but you have to be honest with those who you work with and you also need to be honest with those who are your support team. Your boss will notice that your sincerity is true when you learn now to put on an act, but that you show that you are comfortable and honest with those who you deal with at work and away from work.

The fourth tip that you will need to keep in mind when going for a promotion is that you need to have a good support system. Talk to your family and friends and ask them how you can put in more time at work, but also not make them feel neglected. It is very important that you learn what it takes to have the backup and support standing behind in every step to the top.

Finally, the fifth tip to help you out will be the fact that you are going to have to set your priorities. You are going to have to end up deciding what is important to you. It is very important that you decide what you will need to do to when forced to choose between your job and your work ethics. The boss will be proud of the fact that you stood up for what you believed in.

It is very important that you learn what it takes to get the promotion; however, you will need to consider all the things that you will have to face to get the promotion and how you will over come such obstacles. It is very important that you do everything with confidence too.

Confidence is the one true way that you will be able to sell yourself and be able to get the attention that you’ll need to get the promotion. The boss will make your nervous, however, you will need to learn how you can do everything you can to leave the gitters behind and begin a good, solid career while showing off your confident side.

  • Creating Fear for Inspiration

If you have read or have been involved in personal development, whether it is goal-setting, time management, motivation, weight loss, or the many other categories and have not taken hold of what you desired, chances are that you’re lacking an inner drive towards that elusive goal.

    Advertisements

You have brought books, CDs, tapes, searched the internet, and maybe even attended seminars, but yet you find that you fall short of your desire or you don’t even come one step closer to what you set out to achieve. You may ask yourself “Why do I keep failing? Am I supposed to just remain who I am today?”

Do not lose hope and sight of your goal. If you have obtained personal development resources before, you have a desire to improve. You have a desire to be intimate in your relationships. You have a desire to look your best. You have a desire to free yourself from debt.

Here is a fantastic analogy to help you see the problem. By not defining the problem correctly you can not provide a correct solution, leaving you to wonder your whole life about “what could have been”. Think of the books you read, the CDs you listen to, the seminars you attend, as a spark. This spark has an extremely powerful potential. It has the potential to ignite and create fire. Can you see the relation between the spark and the resources you read and listen to? These personal development guides create an internal spark in you. They pump you up guiding you towards your goal’s correct path.

However, it doesn’t take long until you find yourself not moving forward on the path toward your goal, or that you have totally moved off the path. You may have even lost ground by feeling so beaten up after failing you enter into a state of depression and fear. What you need is to turn the spark gained from the personal development resources into a roaring fire. A fire so dominant and independent that it will continue to burn and not require outside help in keeping it that way. To see what can fuel that spark into a fire, ask yourself, “this internal desire I have to improve, where is it coming from?” Are you sick of arguing with your partner or friends and you want to have more intimate relationships? Is it that you’re tired of worrying about being able to put food on the table, provide clothing, and shelter? Are you embarrassed by how those additional pounds make you look?

Now that it is apparent as to why you want to improve, make it a strong fear. Using the financial example: you are struggling to create and provide the necessities. Create the fear that one day you will be unable to provide, or that for once in your life you want to give without worrying about the financial burden. This is your fear. This is your fuel for the spark to ignite it into a roaring fire and keeping it burning strongly.

So the next time you feel you do not have what it takes to achieve that elusive goal, recall the fear of what could be. Pull out that fear and use it to propel yourself forward. By asking yourself “what could be”, you will avoid yourself saying later “what could have been”.

  • How to Memorize

To memorize is to store information in your brain for reuse later. The definition of memory is the power or act of remembering. The definition of remembering is to recall, to bring back to mind by an effort.

    Advertisements

Some people are able to memorize things temporarily and then forget them when they are no longer of use. Many times this is the case with a person who may study just for the sake of passing a test containing information they don’t feel is of particular importance, yet they are required to know it anyway for a job or to pass to the next level of a class or school.

Preschoolers must make the effort to memorize the alphabet, to recognize colors, to write their names. This type of information is of importance in their daily lives as they go through each year of school. Often an older child will have to memorize the multiplication tables or all the states in the United States.

Use of flash cards is a well-known way to memorize. If you are studying a foreign language, you can use the flash cards to write one interpretation on one side, and the other version of the word on the other side. Children’s books often use the flash method to tell a story that will help the child memorize. Pop-ups are a fun way to learn. Many books will use pictures of animals, toys, or even food to help the child memorize the name of a word and its proper usage.

Have you ever taught tricks to a dog? It must memorize the steps to the trick in the process of learning what you want. Teaching a parrot to talk requires the parrot to memorize the words you choose for it to learn. Sometimes an animal can memorize the path home or a smell of certain people. Maybe you need to learn some tricks, like recalling names at a party!

To remember combinations, middle school students must memorize the numbers that will open their locks. They also have to memorize their school ID numbers to go through the line in the cafeteria for billing to their lunch accounts.

Sometimes people have to make phone calls and don’t have pen and paper ready. They may have to temporarily memorize the number given them by an operator assistant.

If you have children, you may have asked them to memorize things like their phone numbers and addresses in case they get lost. Their teachers may even require this at the beginning of their school year in the younger grades of education.

    Advertisements

There are a vast number of books written on the process to improve memory. Word games were invented for such a use. Even crossword puzzles require extensive use of the memory. Studies have been done for years on ways to trick your mind to memorize. Playing with people’s names can help you memorize them. Make a rhyming game in your mind with the name. Rhyming stories are a fun way to memorize. Or you could try associating the name with a color. Whatever your choice to improve your memory, it can only benefit you to succeed!

  • Are You A Victim Of Vagueness Or A Champion Of Clarity?

It is estimated that our brains receive information through our senses that result in some four billion neuron impulses per second. Of these four billion pieces of information, we are only consciously aware of about 2,000. That’s only 0.00005%.

    Advertisements

It’s happening to you right now. I bet, until I mention it now, that you were not aware of the feel of your clothes on your skin. Or, be aware of the noises in the background. Or, be aware of the object just inside of your peripheral vision. Until I mentioned them you were paying your full attention to something else.

If you had to be fully aware of all the information that you receive all of the time you probably would be so overwhelmed that you wouldn’t be able to function. The unwanted information is filtered out through a process of Deletion, Distortion and Generalisation. This filtering process is driven largely by our Beliefs of how things are at that time.

Whilst this can be hugely helpful in avoiding our brains from exploding it can lead us into making assumptions about given situations that might not serve us well; we can easily become victims of the vagueness that we accept as fact.

To make matters worse when we communicate with others we pass on our assumptions, with the additional assumption that the recipient makes the same assumptions. Our assumptions create gaps in our communication that we expect the other person to fill with the SAME understanding. All too often because of our assumptions we do not deliver what was expected.

Here are some examples of vagueness. What assumptions are you making when you interpret them?

“Go and increase morale in the team”

“Make sure that they fully appreciate our efforts”

“Spend more time on customer relations”

    Being a Champion of Clarity

First off, to be a Champion of Clarity you have to recognise that communication is full of assumption. A Champion of Clarity recognises the pitfalls of assumption both as a speaker and as a listener.

As a listener they are only too aware of the following phrase:

“The meaning of your communication is the response that you get”

As such a Champion of Clarity takes responsibility for ensuring that their communication is fully understood.

As a listener they recognise that they often interact with Victims of Vagueness and they take steps to avoid relegation from a Champion of Clarity by ensuring that they fully understand the intention of the communication behind the words that they hear.

Good ways of ensuring understanding is getting sensory cues that provide the evidence of the successful future desired outcome.

    Advertisements

In response to the vague statements above a Champion of Clarity would ask something like:

“And when I have increased morale in the team, what will let you know that it has been done well?”

“What is it that will let them know that we put in effort in a way that should be recognised?”

“And when we are spending more time on customer relations, what will you see and hear?”

  • Control Your Own Level of Motivation

When I first mention this to most people, they really don’t get it, so here is a simple formula for keeping your moods upbeat.

Audio books and music can be used as tools for motivation. The audio book is such a great motivational and learning tool, while you are commuting, or just out for a drive by yourself. I mention “by yourself” because, ideally, you should spend quality time with people in your car.

    Advertisements

You can learn so much about life and a self-improvement audio book can keep you motivated all day long.

When I first started listening to audio books, I would show up to meetings relaxed, with fresh ideas, and motivated. When people asked me the secret, I told them about the magic of audio books.

Most of them never asked me again, thought I was some strange eternal optimist, and never bothered to try an audio book.

Unfortunately, many people are slaves to stress, and don’t want to change anything. They go about their lives with a perfect recipe for a heart attack and high blood pressure.

Here is the ultimate recipe for a very sad and short life. You must combine “running late” to work, high volume traffic, the daily latte, a high stress job, and show up barely on time or late.

Ready to take yourself to the next level? Find 101 ways that can work as a launchpad. These nuggets are delivered to you one page at a time. Implement it, see the result, repeat!

    These nuggets can help you:
    • Be goal-driven vs emotion-driven
    • Be strong on the face of criticism
    • Handle difficult situations smoothly
    • Increase likability among peers
    • Be irresistibly charismatic

Some people are, what I call, “mad at the world.” They drive from one intersection to the next, making gestures at everyone. Some of these people can be helped, while others go through a daily cycle of frustration and even invite violence.

    Advertisements

Now, let’s get back to you. As long as you stay aware, you have control over your motivation, moods, and level of optimism. So, take charge by plugging yourself into positive energy with books, audio books, music, and positive people.
