• A Time to Rest, A Time to Heal

Life is not always a pleasant walk down the garden path. Who has not known pain and anguish? Who has not suffered the wounds of a relationship discord? Problems are challenges life casts our way.

We navigate through the detours and face dead-ends in our journey. We set sail, aware of the possibility of stormy weather that can develop overnight. But we are determined to ride out the storm and not get lost in it.

At times, we take more than we can handle. We are caught up in giving ourselves to the call of duty. We tend to justify the demands on our time and energy. We forget that the world will go on, with or without us.

Life goes in cycles – sometimes the cycle is up, then it goes down, like the spokes of a wheel. Sorrow and grief comes to everyone sooner or later.

A grieving heart affects the mind, body and spirit deeply. Sometimes the pain is buried so deeply where no one can reach it, much less touch it.

Frustrations, failures, relationship issues, career and family concerns, financial issues, health problems and having too much on the plate all add up to stress.

Do you listen to the signs your body sends to slow down or take a much needed rest ? There is only so much pain or suffering one can bear. There is a limit to human endurance.

Peace becomes elusive. Perspective is not as sharp, there is too much clutter in the mind.

It helps to get away from the source of conflict to gain a better perspective and to re-group your thoughts. Take a vacation. If this is not feasible, a day away from it all will probably do.

But take a breather. This is not running away, woes are still hovering over and waiting. Taking a respite from it all paves the way to healing the accumulated emotional and mental stress.

Anxiety and worry cloud anyone’s judgment. Perhaps, there is a need to cut some slack for now. What would you change if you were faced with the same situation?

Take the time to re-evaluate and re-assess your priorities. It is a time to step back and look after your needs. Relax, catch your breath, even for a short time, because you have to take the next step. The battle is not over.

    Advertisements

Plan the next stage, for life’s problems do not dissipate into thin air . Pull yourself together, empower yourself so that your thoughts and actions are in harmony with your highest truth of who you are. Validate your beliefs.

Deep wounds need healing and this takes time. Retreat is a good start- retreat from all that is worrisome, confusing and aggravating. Quiet time and time alone to reflect is a good way to get energized and prepare to move on.

This is the time to recharge your energies. It is a time to heal, mind, body and soul. It is a time to recognize the chaos and confusion that can cause illusions or delusions and make peace elusive.

Forgive what needs to be forgiven. Forgiveness can be liberating.

Healing takes time, allow yourself that. Remember, time is a great healer, if you let it.

  • A Key Element In Public Speaking: Timing Pauses

Timing is essential when speaking in public. The cliché: It is not what you say but more on how you say it, applies so much to public speaking.

    Advertisements

Where you put your pauses during your presentation is one of the important aspects of maintaining an audience that is free from drowsing off. Couple this with humor and you are definitely on a roll.

Timing is the element involved during reactions that are spontaneous especially on developments during your delivery that are unexpectedly expected.

Do not forget, though, that when you expect any laughter to burst any time soon, avoid speaking as your voice and whatever it is that you are saying will most probably be drowned out by the noise of the audience.

Make sure to remember that laughter is extremely difficult to get and so very much easy to discourage. Try as much as possible to maintain eye contact with the audience for a little time longer when you deliver that punch line.

The audience size could also affect the way you use your timing. When the audience is small, the presentation you have will most probably be delivered in a lesser time compared to if you have a large audience. The reaction of a large audience will get to be a little longer and not as quick as if the audience is small. You also have to wait until the seemingly ripple effect of your punch line gets to that audience in the back row.

Believe it or not, putting that much needed silence in your presentation is one of the hallmarks of a skilled and good presenter. No public speaker should jabber constantly away in the hopes of keeping an audience glued to anything it is you have to say. Ironically, this is one effective way to keep their focus off you. The use of silence adds that much needed polish in your presentation making you appear as a confident expert.

Short pauses are effective to use in order for you to separate your thoughts. These pauses last from half a second to two. You do not have to literally count though, just keep in mind to slow down. This gives the audience a chance to absorb all of what it is you are getting across. It also helps if you change the inflection in your voice during the end of a thought as this could also signal to the audience that another thought is coming their way. Pauses are also an effective means if you want to highlight something. Put it before any word or thought you want the audience to focus on, they will most definitely get that.

Eating right is a hard thing to do for some of us and for others it is easier to do. Eating healthy is a big problem these days. For some of us it is hard to buy healthier food due to the fact it cost more to fix meals the right way. There are a lot of people that are just making it in the real word with out having to buy a loaf of bread that cost $2.50 a loaf when they can get a loaf for $.50 so what do they do get the $.50 loaf and knowing that its bad for them but that’s all they can afford. So eating right can be hard for you too. We have options. You can grow your own home garden; bake your own bread for a fraction of the cost and so on.

What are some of the things I can eat?

Some of the things you can eat right are vegetables, dairy products, high-protein dishes and so on. You need a certain amount of fat, carbs, etc, which helps to keep you healthy.

In addition, do some excising; excising is always good for you. Exercise will increase your health, even if you cannot afford the four basic groups of nutritious foods. In addition, you have many services available to you, which can offer you food supplies.

Your doctor might be able to tell you how to go about doing this and the right way for your body. You cannot just jump in and change everything about you overnight. You have to take time to start and to learn. For some of us that have been eating wrong all of our life, this would be hard to do over night. Then again, others may not have any problems with it. You want to consider your position and move forward.

  • How to feel more positive

Learning how to feel more positive is something that a lot of people struggle with. It may have something to do with their self esteem, but its most their self image that will affect a person’s attitude. Basically, if you feel that you are nothing, then you are going to act like a “nobody”. If a person feels that they are not good enough, then they will try to do their best at a level below potential, because that’s the best they can do comfortably. A lot of people who are negative really do not take on more challenges, simply for the fact that they don’t want to be reminded of how empty life can be. The sooner you change your negative attitude to a positive attitude the better.

    Advertisements

The first thing that you’ll want to do is take a good long, hard look at yourself. Keep in mind that there are going to be qualities that you like and qualities that you hate. Perhaps you think that you may a loyal friend, but you’re not so well as a painter. There are a lot of things that a person simply can’t do well (it’s almost like its not in their nature) and there are things that you’ll have a passion for and perform well. The key is passion. As soon as you take your negative attitude and make it a positive attitude, you’ll be able to overcome some of your issues.

It is very important that you turn all your negative feelings into a positive. When you feel the opportunity to shine, you should never hold back. You’ll want to consider that there are times where you’ll be able to overcome your challenges with grace, then there are going to be times where you are less then perfect. The key is to allow the negative and positive to balance each other out. As long as you don’t make yourself overwhelmed with negativity, then you’ll be able to overcome anything. The key to success is definitely your attitude.

You may want to consider attitude adjustments. When you feel yourself having a bad day or a negative thought, you’ll want to take the thought or day and turn it upside down and make something positive out of it. You may have lost the championship, but you still went to state finals (a huge accomplishment). If you see a lot of negativity in your life, then it is only because you want to see the negative.

Finally, if you want to become a positive person then you need to let go of the act. A lot of people will put on an act. They will begin to act as if they are someone that they are not. It is very important that you stay true to yourself. This will help you to stay on track with your own personal goals. If you allow someone to make you feel less than successful, then you are only punishing yourself. Basically, you can’t allow others to get to you. You will need to block out the negative responses and just be yourself.

There are a lot of ways for you to become a positive person, but you will want to make sure that your life is going into a direction that suits you. You’ll also want to consider taking the time to set goals that you want and not what others expect of you. If you start thinking for yourself you’ll be able to find passion and motivation. Once you have passion or motivation, you’ll feel like you can do anything and it’s a wonderful moment to discover just how great your life is. When you stop wishing for the best and accept the things that you have, you’ll appreciate your world more and also the hard work that you put into life.

  • How to feel as if you are a success

Very often people do not give themselves the proper credit. You’ll find that not only are you successful on some level, but you are worth more than you think. It’s all about self image and the way that you feel about yourself. Obviously the grass is always greener on the other side, but keep in mind that there is always someone who admires someone. Many people do not think that they are successful or valuable, but when you see your life through the eyes of others, it may be a different story. Basically, success is truly in the eye of the beholder. You can have success on so many different levels.

    Advertisements

The first way that you may consider yourself to be success is in your career. You may have gone to school and gotten a job that would make others green with envy. Even if you are at the bottom of the barrel in the corporate world, others may see your passion as a good quality that is desired. The truth is, everyone is successful in their career to someone. Even if it’s your mom (and yes, her opinion is heavily appreciated), there is someone who thinks that you’ve come along way. You may have more than just a job, but it could be a basis for some lasting friendships or relationships. Everyone is also good at some point of their job because they wouldn’t have the job if it wasn’t the case.

You don’t just have to be a successful business person, but you can also have success on a completely different level. A lot of people see their marriage and family as part of their success. You may want to keep in mind that success has many colors. You may be married for fifty years. In today’s standards, a long marriage is very rare. It’s also a good way to feel successful. As a mother whose child is graduating law school, it’s quite an accomplishment. You’ll want to rate your success based on your family life.

However, society doesn’t say that you need to have a family anymore either. Even if you are respected icon of the community, your peers still see you as a successful person. You will find that with a kind heart, you’ll be envied by many. A lot of people do not have it in them to be naturally generous. This is why we all don’t volunteer time. Some people have a natural character trait that allows them to think about others without even considering themselves. While many people will take the time to consider other people, but then a quick moment as to how they will be affected, these type of people do not give themselves a thought.

Right now, society can be blamed for most of the things that are wrong with the world. This also includes the pressure to be perfect. The truth about the matter is simply that there are a lot of things out of your hands. You can’t control everything that happens to. It’s hard to be perfect for anyone and it’s not right to make yourself become something you are not. You’ll want to consider that there is certain responsibility needed on your part. If you can stop and think about yourself and proclaim that you are an overall happy person, then you should be given a medal. Everyone is unhappy with some part of themselves (job, personal relationships, family, so on…), but if you are able to appreciate the things that you have, then you are a successful person.

Keep in mind that no good deed goes unreturned. If you work hard for the things that you desire, you’ll receive them, but you have to keep in mind, that you get from the world what you give to the world.

  • Empowered Leadership

It seems that every decade or so there is some new fad that runs through the business world in terms of supervision and in the world of diversity management, downsizing, outsourcing, generational work conflicts and the information age, things are even more complicated than ever before.

    Advertisements

No longer does a one size fits all leadership model really work. We can’t treat everyone the same and expect that everything will just “work out” somehow. Managers and leaders must have a framework with which to manage their workers in a way that honors everyone’s unique and specific position on the job.

Empowered leadership is the way to do just that. Empowered leadership shares the power between management and the workers, thus empowering both groups.

Conventional wisdom tells us that when those in power relinquish some of that power by sharing it or giving it to their employees, then they would lose something when in actually, they gain.

Think about it. When people rule with an iron hand, they generally instill fear in those who work for them. Do you do your best work when you are afraid? I don’t know about you but I will attempt to comply because I want to avoid negative consequences but it certainly won’t be my best work. The absolute best a manager can hope for with coercion is compliance. If compliance is enough, then coercion might work.

However, I will gripe and complain and quietly wait for opportunities to get even. I won’t have a kind thing to say about my employer and at every available chance will seek corroboration for how I feel from my co-workers, thus spreading an “us” versus “them” mentality.

When leaders and managers seek to empower their workers, they will gain their loyalty. Workers want to give their supervisor their best when they are listened to and respected. Without fear, their minds can be creative and innovative.

When managers are willing to accommodate special requests and it doesn’t interfere with product or service delivery, then their employees will be sure to give back their best in return. Giving away power only increases a manager’s power.

Now, I am not talking about being a total pushover and only advocating for what employees want. As a manager, you have a two-fold job—you are to represent your employees’ desires, opinions and suggestions to management while at the same time communicating management’s issues, concerns and expectations to your employees. This is not an easy line to walk.

You will never get the best from your employees if they don’t respect you. You cannot be a doormat for your employees to walk over. If they believe you have no bottom line or nonnegotiables, then they will never be satisfied and always asking for more. You will feel used and abused and the truth is, you asked for it.

As a manager, you must hold the bar high. Expect great things from each and every one of your workers. If you only expect mediocrity, mediocrity is exactly what you will get. Set the standards and lead by example. If your workers see you giving it your all, it will be difficult for them to perform below standard.

You must have production goals you are attempting to meet for either products or services. Always enlist the help of your employees to set the goals, with the underlying premise being continual improvement.

And as a manager, you have the responsibility to create a need satisfying workplace for yourself and your workers. You cannot emphasize one to the exclusion of the other without there being undesirable consequences.

    Advertisements

When you focus on production only and forget the human capital, you will end up with resentful, resistant, angry workers. On the other hand, when you only focus on the people end and allow production goals to be compromised; you will have workers who do everything they can to take advantage and to get out of doing the work. After all, if you the manager don’t value production, why should they?

Somewhere in the middle, when you are walking that very fine line between relationships and production goals, you are practicing empowered leadership and that’s where you will get the most from your employees.

  • A Powerful Leadership Tool: Delighting In The People You Lead

Leadership entails getting results, and getting results entails human relationships. The more closely the people and the leader bond, the more results will usually accrue.

    Advertisements

However, most leaders and the people they lead look at those relationships as a one way street: charismatic leaders being commonly defined by sentiments bestowed on them from the people. But great leadership is really a two-way street, also involving sentiments going from the leader to the people.

We never know how good we are as leaders until we are delighting in the people we lead and, through that delight, leading them to get continually better results while they become continually better as leaders and as people.

I’ve seen leaders take a delight in and be inspired by the people they lead, and I have come to realize that this penchant is really a powerful, though rarely used, leadership tool.

However, to use the tool properly, three things must be kept in mind.

    1. Delight must happen within the context of high results-expectations. In your delight, don’t be hampered by the bigotry of low expectations. An army commander I knew was known for having his men undergo the most difficult training and take on the toughest assignments. He delighted in his troops not just for what they wanted to do but what he challenged them to do. After all, leadership is not about having people do what they want to do. If they did want they wanted, you wouldn’t be needed as a leader. Leadership is about having people do what they may not want to do and be committed to doing it.

    2. Delight must be truthful. Don’t try to manipulate people through your delight. When the circumstances called for it, the commander was brutally honest with us. If we weren’t measuring up to his high standards, we’d know about it from him in forceful and vivid ways. His honesty was a leadership lesson: have the troops see themselves as they should be seen, not as they want to be seen. Sure, he riled us up many times. But because his honesty helped the troops become better Marines, it was eventually accepted and even welcomed.

    3. Delight must be practical. The commander was always linking the delight he found in the troops with lessons learned in accomplishing missions and best practices that came from the lessons. His delight wasn’t meant to have people feel good about themselves but to motivate them to take actions to be continually better. In that striving to be better and, getting better in the striving, we bonded. Clearly, going where we had to go and doing what we had to do, we were often miserable; but through it all, there was, in the back of my mind at least, the compulsion not to let him down — and not to let each other down.

You may not have thought about delight as a leadership tool, but it is one of the most effective because it goes right to the heart of getting results through the cementing of right relationships. Keep these three factors in mind when expressing your delight, and your leadership will be blessed daily with new opportunities.

  • Sensory Perceptions

It may begin with an eyestrain-related headache brought on by hours staring at a computer screen.  Or you might experience pain after spending an hour or more with a telephone receiver cradled in your neck.   After nearly eight hours standing up, your feet might be throbbing.  Your pains, however, appear to be exacerbated by stress.

    Advertisements

Stress can manifest itself in a number of physical ways.  Headaches, earaches, abdominal pain, a tingling in our arms and legs, and nausea can all be signs of stress.  In other words, the pressures that we are under can make us physically ill.  As a result, it’s not surprising that we would seek a physical relief from stress.

One of the best ways to deal with stress is to indulge your senses.  Our senses are like our personal radar detectors, letting us know when we are nearing something that is inherently good.  Therefore, it is important that we surround ourselves with things that will appeal to our senses.

First, indulge your eyes.  This can be done in any number of ways.  For instance, you might make sure that you arise early enough to see the sun rise on a summer day.  The joy and peace you feel gazing at the magnificent colors can greatly reduce the amount of stress you feel during the course of your day.  You might also watch a videotape that features an excursion to some exotic locale.  Drinking in the palm trees and the ocean waves can calm your nerves considerably.  You might also consider a trip to your local zoo.  There, you can witness first-hand the magnificence of various animal species, from the striped zebras to the dotted leopards.

Next, consider making a “sound escape.”  Retreat to your backyard, sit in the grass, close your eyes, and listen.  It’s best to do this early in the morning or late at night, when there is not a great deal of activity around.  You may hear the songs of robins…the hum of the cicadas…or the purr of a kitten.  Such nature sounds are incredibly soothing and can provide you with a great escape from your normal routine.  You might even consider keeping a CD in your home of nature sounds that you can play when you feel as if you’re at the breaking point.

Aromatherapy is a favorite relaxation technique nowadays.  This involves treating your nose to exquisite scents.  Scented candles, incense, or scented oils can help to “calm down” your living space, creating a soothing atmosphere.  Some plug-in air fresheners can also be quite effective in re-awakening your sense of smell.   Or you might consider cooking with ingredients that have incredible scents and allowing the aroma to overpower your kitchen.  There is nothing quite so comforting as the smell of fresh bread baking or tomato-basil sauce simmering on the stove.

When trying to de-stress, don’t forget to indulge your sense of taste.  While you won’t want to eat so much that you become overweight, enjoying a few taste sensations can be good for both stomach and soul.  Consider adding some fresh mint to your iced tea, or a lime wedge to your cola drink.  A sliver of chocolate or a taste of vanilla has also been known to help soothe frayed nerves.  Don’t be afraid to experiment with different tastes until you settle upon those that are true stress-relievers.

    Advertisements

Many people combat stress by engaging their sense of touch.  It is no surprise that mothers-to-be often take up knitting—the sensation of tugging at the yarn can be quite relaxing at a stressful time.  You might also consider taking up crocheting, needlepoint, or pottery-making.  Such activities have the added bonus of allowing you to show off your artistic flair.  And you can fill your home with the beautiful art objects you are able to create.  You’ll feel a sense of pride that will lift your spirits—and will make you better able to deal with stressful situations.

Each day, stress tries our senses.  It can blur our vision, disrupt our hearing, and dull our sense of taste.  The obvious antidote to this is to introduce things into our lives that engage our senses in a positive way, that brighten our day.  Such things can seem minor, but they can make a huge difference in how we are able to handle stress.

  • Exercise: The Ultimate Stress-Reliever

Perhaps it’s the result of having a new job, a new mate, or a new baby.  You are overwhelmed with a feeling of excitement.  Yet, you feel inadequate as well.  As a result, you are under a tremendous amount of stress.  At times, you might feel as if there’s no relief in sight—as if you’re on a treadmill which shows no signs of stopping anytime soon.

    Advertisements

However, the secret to effectively dealing with the stress may be to get your body onto an actual treadmill.  Exercise can be the key to stress relief.  It’s an obvious antidote to fatigue.  It can make you feel more energetic, improving your strength and resiliency.  It has been shown that individuals who are more physically fit often experience fewer health troubles.  In addition, exercisers are less likely to suffer from psychological problems such as depression, binge eating, or insomnia.

Without exercise, you are increasing the likelihood that you will be afflicted with colds, flu, or other medical problems.  Aerobic exercise in particular can improve your cardiovascular system and decrease your anxiety level.   Some studies have shown that, during aerobic exercise, a chemical is produced in the brain which helps to heal the body from stress-related conditions.   You should exercise at least three days a week for 30 minutes at a time in order to improve not only your health but your mental outlook.

If you find it difficult to become motivated to exercise, there are a number of steps you can take.  To begin with, you can join an exercise club.  Knowing that you’ll have to pay dues to a gym may make it more likely that you will actually end up exercising.  You might also consider enlisting the aid of a personal trainer.  A trainer can provide powerful motivation, pushing you to complete exercises you never thought possible.  Another idea is to join an exercise class.  There, you’ll meet other people who are in a similar position.  The camaraderie that develops between exercisers can help to reduce your stress level.

In general, exercise should make you feel less anxious.  Your muscles become less tense and you will be less shaky after a round of exercise.  It has also been shown that exercise leads to an hour and a half to two hours of relaxation response.  This has also been referred to as the endorphin response.  As a result, your mood will improve, enabling you to deal more effectively with stress.

Exercise can also improve your self-image.  You’ll experience greater self-worth, which will, in turn, reduce your stress level.  A confident person is an individual who knows how to handle stress without becoming flustered.  As a result of exercise, you may also end up eating better.  Your improved menu may also prove to be a stress reliever.  For instance, if you give up caffeinated drinks, you might become less jittery.

In addition to your sessions in the gym, you should be looking for additional opportunities to exercise.   This could mean taking the stairs instead of the elevator, walking to work instead of driving, or playing touch football in the backyard with your children.  The point is to get moving—and keep moving—at every available opportunity.

Exercise quickens the blood flow to your mind, offering the brain additional sugars and oxygen which can be important if you are concentrating.  Exercise can also clear out waste products from the brain which can result in unclear thinking.  You will also feel a greater sense of well-being as a result of exercise.

As has been shown here, exercise is beneficial for both the body and the mind.  As a result, it can relax you when other techniques fail.  By engaging in exercise, you free up your mind, enabling you to concentrate better and work more efficiently.  Chances are you will not only feel better, you will look better as well.  With your brain under control, you should experience less stress. Granted, exercise takes time and requires discipline, but it is well worth the exertion.  The good feelings you get from a powerful exercise session can actually last for days.  You may find that you actually look forward to working out because of the tremendous benefits it brings with it.
